So after a long time away from shooting full time and really pushing my work and getting it out there to magazines and all that “professional photographer” type of stuff I have decided to start shooting again. I’ve been setting up shoots and they have been getting canceled. But this is good.
Once again I had a model who accepted that this job paid a little bit, not a lot at all, but some wardrobe was included as part of the payment. She agreed but then I get an email about how she has an “agent” who comes with her and she has to pay him 20% so she needs more money. My answer will always be no.
This happens over and over with many who honestly do not understand how this industry really works and how professionals behave. I sent her an email about how I’m not angry, but this is unprofessional.
What bothers me most is that it is now so easy to get into this industry. You have a camera and an Instagram page you’re now a professional photographer. You have been told you’re pretty or have lots of followers to your half naked photos online and you’re a professional model. But the title of professional also relates to your actions.
If you pull a “bait and switch” you’re not professional. If a photographer tries to get you to pose in a way you don’t want to, it’s unprofessional. But this seems to be something people don’t understand. Too many guys want to use photography to try and date models. Models still try to flirt to get more money from a photographer.
I’m not sure if I’m ready for this again but I’m ready to give it a try. I may end up pissing some people off because my new philosophy is to let people know when they are behaving this way. Not out of anger and I don’t want to belittle them with my words, more of an education of how to be professional. And I will always maintain a proper level of respect for these people. I may be disappointed with their actions, but this doesn’t mean they are bad people, it just means they don’t know better so I should do my part to educate them. Whether they listen or not is totally up to them.
The one thing that keeps me going in a positive direction is when I get to work with good people. I get to work with professional people who get the concept, agree to it, and they may be new to the industry, but they just have a killer attitude and sometimes I end up working with them over and over! This is when I feel great about what I get to do!
Today’s photos are of a model I worked with a while back and will be working with again soon. In fact she may be taking over the project from the other model who wanted me to pay her more for bringing her “agent”. I can’t wait to work with her again. It will be a fun shoot, we get along great and I know we will knock it out of the park! These are the types of shoots I want to do again and again.
